There were a lot of them all over the place. He heard a car alarm and turned to see where it was coming from. This was an old reflex, because he didn't own a car anymore. There were cars everywhere. They were like killer bees. There were men and women too. It had been a while since he had walked instead of taking the bus. There was a man on the street corner reading something aloud from the bible. It might not have been the bible, but the man was loud and seemed angry. This was his job, more or less. The thing was, he really didn't want to get trapped into a conversation with this man. He knew he would be the one singled out of all the people on the street that day. He was, after all, the star of the story. He knew furthermore that whatever he said would probably discourage the man and maybe make him think his work was hopeless. And then he would really go to hell. He couldn't help making quick eye contact, though. But he made sure to cross the street and enter the store on the opposite corner.
