Biologist Todd Dawson of the University of California at Berkeley looked at a typical McDonald’s meal with a mass spectrometer to track the carbon compounds that come from corn. He discovered that 52% of a Big Mac is corn. But wait, that’s not all.
“The McDonald’s milkshake. 100% of the carbon was corn-derived. It’s a corn shake.” said Todd Dawson.
Then Dawson did the same test on humans. On average, 60% of the carbon in Americans was from corn, he found, compared to just 10% in Europeans.
“‘We’re like a walking tortilla chip.” said Dawson.
